Creative Hub: Therapeutic Art-Making for Self-Expression
The Creative Hub at Talk Mental Health Indonesia is a biweekly space where young people can explore therapeutic art-making as a means of self-expression and emotional regulation. Unlike traditional art therapy, which requires a licensed therapist, our therapeutic art-making sessions focus on the process of creation rather than the final product. Here, participants are encouraged to express their emotions through visual arts—such as painting, drawing, and mixed media—learning to channel their feelings in healthy, constructive ways.

Our Approach
The primary goal of the Creative Hub is not to create perfect art but to provide participants with tools for self-regulation, especially during times of distress. By engaging in creative activities, individuals can practice techniques that help them manage their emotions, ultimately building resilience. Inspired by the principles of self-determination theory, we structure our sessions to nurture three essential needs: autonomy, competence, and connection.
Autonomy
Participants are empowered to make their own creative decisions, fostering a sense of control and personal expression.
Skills (Competence)
Through hands-on learning, participants build confidence in their artistic abilities and self-expression, enhancing self-esteem.
Connection
The Creative Hub creates a safe, inclusive community where individuals can interact and connect, sharing their creative journeys and supporting one another.
Therapeutic Art-Making Benefits
In the Creative Hub, the emphasis is on learning and experimenting. Participants are guided through various techniques, allowing them to try new forms of visual expression without judgment. This process can be cathartic and enlightening, enabling them to learn more about themselves indirectly. Additionally, engaging in these activities can foster self-awareness, improve self-regulation skills, and build resilience through non-verbal communication.
Whether they’re releasing pent-up emotions or discovering new facets of themselves, participants leave the Creative Hub with skills that extend beyond the art-making space. We believe that each creation is a step towards self-discovery and healing, reinforcing the idea that everyone’s story and expression are valid.
